Fat Basset

Pixel art RPG reviews. Short and Sweet, like my dog

About Fat Basset

Fat Basset focuses on discovering, playing and reviewing pixel art RPGs. Turn-based or action, round based combat or ATB, this is how I fell in love with video games. There's a good number of new games in the genre, but because they are almost all indie produced, they are difficult to find. Fat Basset is sniffing them out.

First Hour Reviews

Some sites call these First Impressions. I give it exactly one hour of play and share thoughts and most importantly, whether the first hour drew me in to continue playing the game.

Rating Considerations

I'm purposely not recording a score, as I think it ultimately adds nothing of value. Instead I am highlighting the strengths and weaknesses. These can serve as important decision makers in whether or not to play the game. A total score or rating is not important. Poor progression can be forgiven with a great battle system. Art and sound can immerse you with lack of plot (see Anodyne). If you are looking for some sort of ranking, check out Priority Play List.

I am, however, giving each game a recommendation of whether I would play it (if I weren't playing everything to review). These are the levels:

  • Must Play: if you are a fan of the genre, you must play this game
  • Should Play: you really should play this, but don't skip work for it
  • Would Play: this is a fun game, if you are out of must and should, give it a whirl
  • Could Play: If you have nothing better to do, you could play this.
  • Don't Play: Don't waste time or money on this, you will be disappointed.

Full Reviews

Full Reviews happen when a game is finished or I've decided to give up on the game, usually because it just isn't fun. I try to keep it short and sweet, like a good fat basset. You don't want to hear about my life, you just want to know if a game is worth your time.

Priority Play List

This is simply a list of the games I think you should priorize playing through. Some made the list because they are downright awesome. Some because they are classics that the genre is built on. And some make the list simply because they utilize a unique and interesting mechanic.
